Ask a Neurologist

08.05.2009 - MRI

Question:

Hi I was wondering if you could explain my MRI It said they found a 5mm, ovoid, hyperintense lesion in the right anterior corona radiate and a tiny lesion less than 5 mm in the left convexity, not typical for ms. But I have symptoms which are pins and needles in hands and feet and internal and external shaking. Had both for 2 years. I do have hashi’s-just diagnosed after years of fluctuating thyroid which is now normal- no meds. 3 neurologists said NO to MS but I will have to get new MRI now. what do you think and what are your suggestions? B12 normal high anxiety when this all started. Oh MRI of spine normal and no findings. Also any docs in southern calif?

Reply:

According to the MRI criteria of Barkhof et al, you have demyelinating lesions but not in number enough to diagnose MS definitely. The next MRI is necessary to see whether the number of MRI lesions is increasing. The connection between Hashimoto disease and MS is unclear but MS is sometimes accompanied by other immunological diseases. I’m not aware of any MS specialists in Southern California, but Professor Goodkin and Professor Hauser (both university of California, neurology department) are well known.
