What is Betaferon®?

Betaferon® is a modified recombinant form of human interferon beta. It is a purified, sterile, lyophilised protein product that is formulated for injection. Let’s take a closer look at some of the words in that definition. Lyophilized simply means that the product is freeze-dried. (It will need to be reconstituted before injection).


Betaferon® is a protein product: proteins are composed of amino acids and are the most abundant organic compound in the body. They include structural proteins, enzymes (which catalyse chemical reactions), genes, proteins that transport oxygen, proteins of the system. Betaferon® is made up of 165 amino acids and has a molecular weight of 18,500 daltons.
