Visual disturbances
Abnormal eye movements (nystagmus) and double vision (diplopia) may be caused by MS activity in the brain. Inflammation of the optic nerve of the eye (optic neuritis) is one of the most common symptoms and often an early indication of MS. It leads to blurred vision, loss of colour perception and/or pain behind the eyeball, increased by moving the eye. Recovery from these symptoms may not always be complete. An examination by an ophthalmologist may be helpful. Prism eye-glasses, for example, can prevent double vision.
